Die 76. Tony Awards sind am 11. Juni in New York über die Bühne gegangen. Die wichtigste Auszeichnung der Theaterbranche machte in diesem Jahr vor allem Schlagzeilen mit der Tatsache, dass erstmalig offen nicht binäre Personen nominiert wurden. J. Harrison Ghee und Alex Newell haben vorab zugestimmt, in den jeweiligen Kategorien als Männer eingestuft zu werden. Sie gewannen dann auch tatsächlich den Tony für »Bester Musical-Hauptdarsteller« sowie »Bester Musical-Nebendarsteller«.
»Kimberley Akimbo« ging als großer Gewinner des Abends hervor: »Beste Musik« (Jeanine Tesori / David Lindsay-Abaire), »Beste Nebendarstellerin« (Bonnie Milligan), »Bestes Buch« (David Lindsay-Abaire), »Beste Hauptdarstellerin« (Victoria Clark) und »Bestes Musical« gingen an das Stück, welches von einem jungen Mädchen handelt, welche krankheitsbedingt wie eine alte Frau ausschaut und mit diesem Schicksal umgehen muss.
Ariana DeBose (»West Side Story«) führte zum zweiten Mal durch den kurzweiligen Abend.
