Am Sonntag-Abend wurden in der Radio City Music Hall in New York die 68. Tony Awards des American Theater Wings und der Broadway League verliehen. In der von Hugh Jackman moderierten Gala gingen vier Preise, darunter Best Musical, an »A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder«, ebenfalls vier Preise erhielt »Hedwig and the Angy Inch«, darunter Best Revival of a Musical.
Best Actress in a Musical wurde Jessie Mueller als Carole King in »Beautiful: The Carole King Musical«. Neil Patrick Harris, der schon mehrfach die Tony-Verleihung moderierte, erhielt den Tony Award in der Kategorie Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical für die Titelrolle in »Hedwig and the Angry Inch«.
Enttäuschungen dürfte es bei Disney gegeben haben, denn »Aladdin« gewann lediglich einen Tony Award für Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical an James Monroe Iglehart. Auch »Rocky« erhielt nur einen Tony Award, dieser ging an Christopher Barreca für Best Scenic Design of a Musical.
